A Period Townhouse Extension in the Haslemere Conservation Area

Location

Setting

Haslemere Conservation Area

A Georgian townhouse in Haslemere’s Old Town conservation area, a short walk from the High Street. Over time, unsympathetic alterations had worn away much of its character. The brief was to restore it and extend it with care, adding bedrooms, light and better flow without losing what makes the house special.

Before drawing anything, we commissioned a planning feasibility study. It confirmed that, because the house is in a conservation area, the extensions could not be built under permitted development, and that a heritage-led design would decide the outcome.

New side elevation at Timeless Townhouse, Haslemere: painted brick, timber sash windows, a dentil band and a roof dormer

We replaced a later flat-roofed wing with a carefully proportioned extension in matching brick, with fine brick detailing and an elliptical feature window. Set back and below the main ridge, it looks as if it has always been there.

Inside, the plan was reworked for light and flow. The principal bedrooms gained dressing rooms and en suites, and the roof space became two more bedrooms, making a six-bedroom home over three storeys.

The client, a master cabinet maker, shaped many of the details, from the handmade kitchen to adapted antique pieces and foxed glass. Waverley Borough Council approved the plans in 2022.
